Shizuru Fujino (藤乃静留 Fujino Shizuru) is a fictional character in the Mai-HiME series as the student council president of Fuuka Academy.

The ever-graceful Shizuru is often seen sipping tea in the student council room, usually in the company of her Vice President Reito Kanzaki. Ger Kyoto accented-manner is somewhat playful, making an entrance as a playful and charming individual. She's also often antagonized by her fellow Student Council member Haruka Suzushiro.

One of Shizuru's few forays out of the Student Council Room is a very brief visit to the "shrine of love" where she places a ribbon, seen by Haruka's best friend Yukino Kikukawa.

Mai-HiME[]

In the novel entitled, "Natsuki's Prelude", some background was provided on the reasons influencing Shizuru's decision to run for the Student Council President position. She was originally just a class representative in her second year of high school. Natsuki, a middle-schooler at the time, had inquired of Shizuru if she as class representatives had a higher access level within the school's intranet than normal students. Shizuru teased Natsuki and assumed she was inquiring for the sake of altering her attendance record. Natsuki informed her that she wanted to gain access to the school's state of its administration, the director's name and personal record, and a register of the staff members and pupils plus their personal records. Shizuru regretted to inform Natsuki that her access to the intranet was not much higher than that of a typical student. Wanting to help Natsuki, Shizuru mentally came to a decision and entered herself as a presidential candidate.

In the second half of the series, Shizuru's role becomes more significant, as it is revealed that she's one of the twelve HiMEs. It is never revealed where Shizuru's HiME mark is, though very subtly it is shown, located on the right side of her lower stomach, by the pelvic region. Shizuru's Child is a large, purple hydra-like entity called Kiyohime and her Element takes the form of a naginata.

During the later course of the series, it becomes apparent that Shizuru has a romantic interest in Natsuki, and the suppression of these feelings begin to unbalance her psychologically. Since the aforementioned Kiyohime's name come from a Japanese tale about a woman who became a snake demon when she was romantically rejected, it's believed that the legend may have partially influenced Shizuru's mind. At some point she rescues Natsuki from Nao Yuuki, and it seen kissing her before taking off her clothes and lying by her side; it's unclear, however, if this fully happened or is an interpretation of said facts coming from Yukino and Haruka, who witnessed it thanks to Yukino's CHILD Diana.

After both her HiME-status and her sincere, but increasingly unstable are discovered by Natsuki herself, after Haruka confronts Shizuru about her absence from the school and declares Shizuru's love for Natsuki to be "disgusting" which causes Natsuki to recoil in shock, Shizuru loses her mental balance and becomes yet another puppet playing to the plan of the Obsidian Lord. She reaffirms it by destroying Diana aka the CHILD of the aforementioned Yukino, thus killing Haruka through it since Yukino herself is all but shouted to be in love with Haruka. Under the Obsidian Lord's influence she also destroys the First District organization, responsible for recruiting the HIMEs, so Natsuki won't have to. Finally, when Nao again captures Natsuki, Shizuru goes rescue her and kills Nao's CHILD (plus Nao's ill mother, her most important person), and has to be stopped from killing the now indefense Nao by Natsuki herself.

In a final confrontation Shizuru fights Natsuki, who has realized that her Most Important Person is Shizuru rather than her mother, along with Duran increasing drastically in size. Shizuru misunderstands Natsuki's explanation for Duran's increased size, and believes the "omoi" (literally emotion) Natsuki feels for her is hate, and drops a huge bell on her as they fight in a church (mirroring how the mythological Kiyohime used a bell to kill the man who refused her). However, Shizuru is taken aback when rather than fighting her, Natsuki kisses her. She then hugs Shizuru and sayis that even when she does not love her in the way Shizuru desires, but she is happy that Shizuru loved her. Natsuki then orders Duran to destroy Kiyohime, which made Natsuki and Shizuru disappear in each other's arms thereafter. Shizuru dies peacefully, saying that she's happy now.

When Mashiro resurrects every single destroyed CHILD so all HiMe can fight the Obsidian Lord, Natsuki and Shizuru are revived. The now back to sanity Shizuru is seen briefly sobbing her heart out and begging for Natsuki's forgiveness, which she gets from her; she later apologizes to the other HiMe, albeit in a more light-hearted manner, and joins the fray with them.

After their resurrection by Mashiro the two seem to have maintained their close relationship and during the day of Shizuru's graduation, their relationship progressed into something much more. The official Sunrise episode guidebook entitled "Mai-HiME Anime Book Volume 2" has addressed their current relationship status. On page 25, under Shizuru's profile section, it mentions that "Once again, Natsuki spoke affectionate words to the graduating Shizuru. Before one knows, happiness will visit these two."

Mai-HiME manga[]

In the manga Shizuru is not a HiME, and her role is largely reduced. She still provides information to Natsuki, but their relationship is left largely unexplored.

Relationships[]

  • Natsuki Kuga: A close ally who allows her junior to use the Student Council's computer to look up information relating to the HiME. During Natsuki's information-gathering visits, Shizuru treats her with a great fondness and tenderness, which doesn't seem overtly reciprocated by the blue-haired girl. Extra material from the series states that Natsuki's desire to research this material and her belief that the Student Council's computer was able to access secure files were the major factor in Shizuru's decision to stand for the Presidential election, which she won handsomely over her challenger and rival Haruka Suzushiro, who derisively refers to Shizuru as that bubuzuke woman, referring to her accent and penchant for tea.

Miscellaneous[]

  • In spite of the fact that her role in both series was that of a secondary character, she still has a wide range of admirers among the show's fans. In fact, she has even won a character popularity poll at SUNRISE Studio's official website twice in a row,[1] besting even the actual leads.
  • Shizuru's character song, Katakoi Enka, is presented in Mai-HiME character vocal album vol.2, by her seiyuu Naomi Shindou.
  • To show that Shizuru speaks with a distinct Kyoto Accent, the English dub of the series gives her a southern accent in order to differentiate her from the other, "normal" speaking characters.
  • She is the 6th runner-up of Anime Saimoe 2005 and the 5th one is Natsuki Kuga.
